Juhuno (from 2012 to 2014)
poetry text to soundscape convertion:
This project was born because of a poetry book called “O meu jardim interior” (“My inside garden”), written by my brother João Nuno (Fev. 1973 – Nov.2000), wich has been independently publicated by my mother Vírginia Mendes in the year 2002.
His poetry is rich in metaphors, in feelings and appearences, combining places, experiences and people. Although it’s free poetry, it has a strong cadence, and its from that ritmical demarcation structured by sentences, words and punctuation that arrises the idea of sound.
His words are not only the voice of theses sound compositions, as also the unique used instrument as source of sound.
Using sampling techniques it was possible to create melodies and rithms – transforming his writing into diferent sound textures, with diferent densities. This is how it was possible to pass from word-to-sound.
The objective of this project is clear: not only recreate the looks of the poems, as also their particular emotions.
soundscape to video convertion: .
The second phase of the project consists in the enlargement to a medial transversality – from word-to-sound to video.
A simple challenge was made to several emerging artists:
– a new interpretation will arrise if theses artists reinterpretate these soundscapes. Having access to the titles, but deprived of the content (they can never read the text’s) , I intend them to use their own archives (videos, pictures, drawings, etc.) or to make something new in order build a new object.
In the end, the results can be aesthetically diverse, maybe only homogenized by the own sound, but it’s that same diversion that can add extra value to this medial enlargement.
For the last, I leave here my deepest gratitude to all the colaborators that contributed to this project:
Fernando Sebastião, Frederico Babo, Hernâni Reis Baptista, João Brojo, José Oliveira, Sebastien Čopko Fraboulet e Yuliya Molina
